The Legend of the Willow Pattern Plate

Once in China about 200 years ago there was a mandarin who had a lovely daughter. His daughter was called Koong-se. Koong-se was in love with Chang but her father wanted her to marry a rich Duke.
Koong-se didn’t want to marry the Duke. The mandarin wanted to keep the lovers apart so he built a high fence round his palace. The mandarin planned to have the wedding the day the blossoms fell from the tree. On the day of the wedding was meant to take place, the adults drank too much wine. Chang dressed up as a servant and sneaked into the palace. He and Koong-se escaped across the bridge. But at the last minute the mandarin saw them. The mandarin gave chase with a whip.
Koong-se and Chang escaped to an island and stayed there for years. One day the Duke was sailing in a boat and saw them. He sent guards in and killed them. The gods took pity on them and changed them into doves.
